Giulia stood in the sunlit courtyard of the Italian high school during a short break. She was nineteen, in her final year, and the warm early-summer air made the stone pavement hot underfoot. She wore open leather sandals that left most of her feet bare.

She and her friend finished their cigarettes together. Giulia dropped hers on the ground and pressed the sole of her right sandal firmly over it until the tip went out and the cigarette lay flat.

Her friend simply tossed her own cigarette a few steps away and left it there without crushing it.

Giulia looked at the two cigarettes and said quietly,
“You just leave it like that?”

The friend shrugged. “It’ll go out by itself.”

Giulia stepped closer to the untouched cigarette, lifted her right foot, and brought the sole of her sandal down on it. She pressed steadily until it was completely extinguished and flattened.

While she crushed it she said,
“I don’t understand why you didn’t crush the cigarette. Now I’ll crush it myself… I really like crushing things under my feet.”

She kept her foot on it a moment longer, then stepped back. Both cigarettes now lay blackened and flat on the stone.

A few seconds later Giulia noticed something small crawling near her feet. She could not tell what it was, but it was on the ground and she liked to crush things under her feet, so she decided not to wait. She lifted her right foot again and pressed the sole of her sandal down firmly on the little shape until it stopped moving.

When she lifted her foot she saw what it had been: a small insect, now crushed flat against the pavement.
